To celebrate this week's total solar eclipse, we've posted an excerpt from science writer Rebecca Boyle's book, "Our Moon: How Earth’s Celestial Companion Transformed the Planet, Guided Evolution, and Made Us Who We Are": https://shorturl.at/fgsKO

Be sure to also check out the interview we did with Boyle where she shares her thoughts on the future of the moon, what is so important about the solar eclipse from a human perspective, and the eclipse a hundred years ago that ended up "proving" Einstein's theory.

What are you doing during today's eclipse?

John L. Heilbron (1934–2023), Historian of Science

It is with deep sadness that Closer To Truth shares news of the death of John L. Heilbron, Professor Emeritus of History of Science and former Vice Chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley.

A prolific scholar of prodigious range, John was considered the leading historian of the physical sciences of his generation and the possessor of great scholarly acumen and critical judgment. The author of more than twenty books, he received the profession’s highest book prize, the Pfizer Prize, from the History of Science Society for his study The Sun in the Church: Cathedrals as Solar Observatories. Among his other major works were Lawrence and His Laboratory: A History of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, Volume 1, with Robert W. Seidel; and The Dilemmas of an Upright Man: Max Planck as Spokesman for German Science. Speaking personally, I enjoyed my discussions with John on epistemology, critical realism and consonance in science and theory, and the scope and limits of science. His disarming humor complemented his incisive and penetrating analysis.

Our condolences to family, colleagues, and friends.
