Daniel Hale Williams, a Black cardiologist, performed one of the first successful open-heart surgeries in 1893. Williams established his own pratice but he had to perform care — including surgeries — on patients inside their homes, as hospitals largely did not allow Black doctors to practice in their facilities. He went on to found the first Black-owned hospital.
