A Portland couple tried everything to get their son mental health treatment. Then, he killed his mother |
Hunter Graham says his family's tragedy is evidence of Oregon's flawed mental health system, which waits for someone to commit a crime before mandating treatment. In November, Hunter's son, Austin, confessed to murdering his mother, telling police he strangled her to death in their family home in what Hunter believes was a psychotic episode.

In the community of Gearhart on the Oregon Coast, residents have become accustomed to the herds of elk that come to visit, even passing through residential neighborhoods. But things have changed in the last few years. Fewer of the animals started showing up.
That's likely because they were being hunted. Between 2021 and 2023, hunters killed 77 elk on a single property. And it's all legal — the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife issues elk tags to landowners who report that elk have damaged their property. They issued over 600 tags in Clatsop County alone during that same period.
The people who requested elk damage tags say it's necessary to deter the elk and the damage they can cause. But others think it's a tactic that's being overused, even abused. KGW investigative reporter Evan Watson took a closer look at the program and the impact it's having in this idyllic coastal community. We've checked in a few times recently about the overall price tag for a new I-5 crossing over the Columbia River and how Oregon and Washington intend to pay for it.
But within those discussions, which are still ongoing, we're also starting to learn more about what this thing will look like, how it'll be built and what each piece actually costs.

For instance, we know now that this will be a twin-span design, just like the current bridge — but they're probably only building one at a time, which will mean that commuters will be crossing a single bridge until the second one is built. All that and more: https://youtu.be/5zbTrbusWcA

Beginning on Labor Day in September 2020, a historic wind event that blew through Oregon helped ignite or spread multiple fires — some of them growing to massive proportions. The fires burned down thousands of homes and other structures, killing almost a dozen people.

Not long after that, investigations into the origins of the fires began, soon followed by lawsuits. One of those suits accuses utility company Pacific Power of starting some of the major fires by failing to de-energize power lines in extremely high-risk areas.

Now, more than two years later, that $1.6 billion class action suit is finally going to trial. Tonight, we went through the opening arguments in this landmark case: https://youtu.be/GBpfRwbIYVc

Nearly a dozen counties in eastern Oregon have now voted to consider seceding from the state in order to join Idaho. The "Greater Idaho" movement is a longshot effort, but it's also the symptom, we're told, of deep discontentment with the state of Oregon. The Story team traveled to Eastern Oregon to hear from people. You'll see those stories this week, streaming live at 6 p.m. First episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fBGD...
