#OnThisDay  in 1945, VE day marks the end of World War 2 in Europe as Nazi Germany signs an unconditional surrender to the Allies. 

Millions of people rejoiced in the news that Germany had surrendered, relieved that the intense strain of total war was finally over. In towns and cities across the world, people marked the victory with street parties, dancing and singing.

But it was not the end of the conflict, nor was it an end to the impact the war had on people. The war against Japan did not end until August 1945, and the political, social and economic repercussions of the Second World War were felt long after Germany and Japan surrendered.

But the radioactivity also spread to a second zone in southern Belarus, where people continued to live until 1999

Fact: When he took the oath of office, George Washington had just one original tooth in his mouth. Perhaps even more disturbing than having wooden teeth—Washington wore dentures made with teeth from animals and humans! 

#OnThisDay  in 1961 a force of 1,400 CIA-trained and armed Cuban exiles landed in the Bay of Pigs in a doomed attempt to overthrow Fidel Castro. The invasion proved a disaster and it was all over within 24 hours.
