For a continued fraction [a0, a1,..., am] and a positive integer n at most m, the nth partial convergent is the continued fraction [a0, a1,..., an]. So we've truncated the original partial fraction at the nth index. When the a's are integers, the partial convergents are rational numbers, and provide excellent rational approximations to the actual value of the original continued fraction [a0, a1,... am].
