Have you heard of the term 'heat dome'? It's an extreme weather pattern that's been causing record temperatures and wildfires across North America and Europe during parts of 2021.
Heat domes are not a new phenomenon but they have been contributing to some of the heat waves many have been experiencing. in the summer of 2021 In Western Canada, temperatures hit 49.6C, breaking the previous record by almost 5C.
The soaring temperatures caused by heat domes have left many vulnerable people struggling in the sweltering heat. Many have been forced to take refuge in cooling centres - air-conditioned buildings, such as stadiums, where residents can work and sleep.
In this #shorts video, BBC weather presenter Abbie Dewhurst explains how a heat dome is a mountain of warm air pressing down across a huge area.
