Exercise physiologist Dr. Carmen Swain asserts that movement is medicine; it is a fundamental determinant of one's quality of life. Unfortunately, accessing exercise and gyms is impossible for so many Americans. Dr. Swain shares her research on how a shockingly simple visual system can help individuals with intellectual disability with increasing their physical fitness, self-efficacy, and especially, their independence in the gym setting. She describes the responsibility we all share to extend tools and support to a group whose struggle often remains invisible. Carmen first became passionate about exercise while playing multiple sports in high school and college, and she soon discovered she wanted to study exercise physiology to learn more about human performance. Her teaching and research examine exercise in a variety of populations and situations, and she now teaches with a focus towards using movement as a lifestyle medicine to promote health and wellbeing, including lessons from research that can promote personalized behavior change for all people to be more active in our modern world.
