Archytas is credited with having founded the discipline of mathematical mechanics.
As described in a book written 500 years after his death, he was reputed to have designed and built the first artificial flying device—a bird-shaped model propelled by steam.
This machine, which its creator called The Pigeon, may have been mounted on a pivot or wire for its flight.
It reportedly flew some 200 meters.
