Turkey has long been a nation that welcomed refugees, with 3.6m currently residing there, 2 million more than any other country in the world. But in recent years, as anti-immigrant sentiment has grown alongside an economic crisis, government officials have taken a stricter approach.
Now, gaining entry to Turkey, even when individuals are seeking asylum, has become increasingly difficult - with many travelling illegally, forced to journey across treacherous landscapes
Anushka Asthana headed to the border of Turkey and Iran, the so-called ‘gateway to Europe’, to meet those protecting it, and those risking it all to get across.
