L.A.'s Sunset Boulevard and Brooklyn Avenue, extending from Chinatown to Monterey Park, were renamed Cesar Chavez Avenue in 1994 as part of a larger effort to honor the civil rights and workers' rights activist the year after his passing. It happened in conjunction with the designation of Cesar Chavez Day — and today, this main artery runs through former and current ethnic enclaves of Los Angeles, from Olvera Street and Chinatown (the site of an historic alignment of Route 66) to the Little Italy and Frenchtown districts. Join us as we cross the Los Angeles River and venture into the former Brooklyn Heights, once the heart of the Jewish community of L.A., along what used to be known as Brooklyn Avenue. Discover remnants of its Jewish heritage intermingling with its Chicano past and current thriving Latinx population, as well as ties to Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers Movement along the way.
