There is a problem inside the farming and ranching industry today that is largely going unspoken. It's the weight. The weight of multi-generational farms and the pressure it puts on the next generation of family farmers coming after. It's not just a business problem either, it is also a parenting problem.
See what happens is the kids get to come back to the farm - they get to do things the way they've always done. "The way my grandpa did it" is the message they've inherited. "The way my father had done it" is the message their father has told them their whole life. This is the way we've done it for generations.
Inside that space - there is ZERO room for solving business problems creatively. And most 3rd or 4th generation farmers we talk to today tell us about the weight that comes with being someone carrying the family torch. We talked to one farmer who decided to take a different path. A path HE was going to forge despite the fact it went against what his dad and grandfather would have said.
Despite the fact that his dad and grandpa had always done it this certain way. He saw for the first time that HE DIDN'T HAVE TO FOLLOW THEM. The farm was on his shoulders - he had to make the decisions for the plain and simple fact that he lost his grandpa and his dad within two weeks of each other. Both of them died. There was no body coming to save him, coming to tell him how he should or should not run the farm.
I'm sure you can image for a moment - especially if you are reading this and you are a multigenerational farmer - your dad and your grandfather both die within two weeks of each other. Do you have what it takes to run the family operation?
