Falun Gong started in 1992 in China. It grew out of the larger qigong movement, but added spiritual and supernatural elements. In 1999 Falun gong was banned in China following several large protests.
Falun gong practitioners have since established themselves in numerous countries around the world. Their lead, Li Hongzhi, settled in New York and established Dragon Springs, a 400 acre compound in the Hudson Valley.
Other Falun gong practitioners established media outlets such as The Epoch times, NTD TV, and the Shen Yun performing art troupe. These have been used to counteract the Chinese propaganda and persecution of Falun Gong.
Falun Gong makes several unusual claims. Supposedly their practitioners can heal themselves, and levitate. Li hongzhi said that science was given to humankind by alien beings, and that the moon was constructed by a humankind in the past.
The most sensational claim from Falun Gong practitioners is the accusation that the Chinese government is harvesting their organs. China did admit to using the organs from executed prisoners in transplants, but the large numbers alleged by Falun gong have not been corroborated.
Looking into the group and the messaging from the Chinese government reveals many claims that directly oppose each other.
