A few years ago, I thought that AT&T would be a cornerstone of this portfolio forever. But their forays into content hurt their financials, distracted management, and ultimately led to a decision to freeze the dividend earlier this year. When they announced a few months ago that they were going to spin off the media assets, shrink the company, and be forced to cut the dividend next year, I decided not to hang around any longer. AT&T is no longer a dividend-growth stock. I replaced AT&T with two different stocks. The impacts on the portfolio of selling AT&T are discussed where appropriate throughout this video. The Portfolio Changes in July: Sold: AT&T (T). Liquidated position. Bought: 26 shares of Pinnacle West Capital (PNW) and 37 shares of AbbVie (ABBV), which is a new position. Also added 6 shares of the dividend-growth ETF SCHD through my dividend-reinvestment program. All purchases are highlighted in yellow in the table In the video. What Happened in July: Collected $262 in dividends from 7 companies. July is a light month in the portfolio’s dividend flow. Dividends will rise in August and then again in September. One company (Smucker) announced a dividend increase, bringing the total for the year to 22 raises with no cuts. Sold AT&T and replaced it with AbbVie (a new position) and additional shares of Pinnacle West Capital. Reinvested dividends to add six shares of SCHD, which becomes the portfolio’s first ETF. The combination of new shares + the dividend increase + the sale and replacement of AT&T resulted in the portfolio’s annual dividend run-rate falling 4% to $5016. While this is a short-term drop, the annual total is still higher than at the beginning of the year, and by the end of the year I am projecting that the portfolio will bring in about 9% more dividends than last year. Total value of the portfolio hit new record high of $165,790, up 3% in the month. The portfolio’s total value has grown 254% since its inception in 2008 without any new money ever having been added. Primary Goal: Generate Reliable, Growing Dividends Each Year The chart in the video shows the DGP’s steady dividend growth every year. That annual growth is the portfolio’s main goal. Since the portfolio’s first full year in 2009, the average annual dividend-growth rate has been more than 10% per year. At current run-rates, 2021’s total dividends will be $5151, which would be an 8.5% increase over 2020. Dividend increases through the remainder of the year should take that total higher. Why the Portfolio’s Dividend Stream Grows Each Year There are three reasons that the DGP’s dividend stream goes up every year. Dividend increases. The companies in the portfolio announce regular raises. I benefited from 30 raises in 2020. So far this year, 22 increases have been announced, and I expect around 9 more by the end of the year. Dividend reinvestments. I collect the dividends and buy new shares each month. That compounds dividend growth. Over the life of the portfolio, more than $39,000 has been recycled back into new purchases. All of the new shares contribute additional dividends after they come on board. Portfolio management. I occasionally make trims and replacements that result in dividend growth. That last point can also work in the other direction. Some changes can cause dividend drops, as did the sale and replacement of AT&T.
