More than thirty countries around the world recognise in law that animals are sentient beings. So what exactly is animal sentience? In this #shorts video we explain how more countries are passing legislation which helps identify animals as having the capacity to experience different feelings such as suffering or pleasure. The latest country to do this is the UK. Vertebrate animals will be recognised as sentient beings for the first time in UK law due to the introduction of the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill. Under this sentience bill people who hurt animals could face up to five years in jail instead of the current six months.
