TikTok is now the biggest prize in tech with its forced divestment being signed into law. So let’s look at who could buy it. ByteDance now has 9 months to a year to find a seller. And TikTok believes that it’s worth over 50 billion while outside parties believe it’s worth around 100 billion. Meta could but since it already owns Facebook and Instagram, it could face antitrust concerns. Google also could but it already owns YouTube so they’ll also face the same problem. There’s Amazon and Microsoft, neither of which owns a social media platform. The TikTok shop tied into Amazon could be game changing, and it’s for that same reason that Walmart is also a potential buyer. Last time around, Walmart teamed up with Oracle to try to buy TikTok. And Oracle is another potential buyer. There’s concern in Washington that Microsoft is already too big, however they seem uniquely equipped for this kind of acquisition. Apple is sitting on trillions and could easily buy it but that doesn’t feel like a good fit. They don’t do social media, it’s too messy for them. But ultimately ByteDance doesn’t have to sell.
