Welcome to Episode 133 of Norse, Myths, Legends, and Folktales. My name is MyLinda Butterworth and today we find the son of a widow having to make a way for himself and is fortunate to find a man to work for. When the man leaves on a trip, he tells the boy not to look in four closed rooms or he would lose his life. Listen in now to know his fate in The Widow’s Son Once, there was a widow so poor that she could not afford to even feed her only son. When the lad was old enough, she sent him out into the world to find his way. After a while, he met a man who said he would let him work for him and that his only task was to keep him company. After a few years, the man needed to go on a trip and told him he would leave him alone for a few days and he could go anywhere he wanted except into 4 rooms that were closed. If he found that he had been in any of these rooms, he would die. The lad was very good until the day before the man should return, and he went into the first room only to find a shelf with a bramble bush rod. He thought nothing of it and closed the door. When the man discovered that he had been in the room, he threatened to kill him. The lad repented so sincerely that he spared his life, and they became friends again. This happened three more times. Each time, the lad pleaded for his life, and each time, he got more stripes for his disobedience. The last time, he found a horse who told him what to do, and they both escaped from the man who was really a troll in disguise.
