In "I Cover the Waterfront" (1933), directed by James Cruze, Ben Lyon stars as H. Joseph Miller, a weary reporter for the San Diego Standard. Miller is disillusioned with his assignment covering the city's gritty waterfront and dreams of landing a job back East to marry his sweetheart. Assigned to investigate smuggling by fisherman Eli Kirk (Ernest Torrence), Miller's luck changes when he encounters Kirk's spirited daughter, Julie (Claudette Colbert), while looking into reports of a nude swimmer. Their unexpected meeting leads Miller to reassess his priorities as he navigates the complexities of his investigation and his budding romance.
