Last year, many of us were introduced to the realities of being young and undocumented when 21 Savage was taken into custody. Since then, a lot has happened. DREAMers like 21 Savage are fighting an uphill battle with DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, that allows young immigrants who were brought to the United States as kids with authorization to live and work here. Even though the Supreme Court ruled that the Trump administration’s actions to terminate DACA were illegal, the future of the program remains in limbo as the Trump Administration has decided it will not accept new applications and will limit renewals to one year instead of two.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, young migrants, refugees and asylum seekers are being turned away at our southern border. The Department of Homeland Security has expelled over 2,000 kids without due process -- claiming child migrants, asylum seekers and refugees could be carriers of the Coronavirus.
In this episode of Complex World, we profile Black Panther actor and DREAMer Bambadjan Bamba and two young women who traveled to the United States as teenagers fleeing violence in their home countries.
