About the Artwork: Adriana produces her visceral paintings in a state akin to meditation. She ruminates on an emotion kindled by a personal dilemma such as identity or loss, or by global crises such as climate change or the current pandemic. Using a diverse visual vocabulary of shapes, lines, and dots with a vibrant palette, Adriana works in layers with a gestural approach. Her non-representational paintings often bring to mind biomorphic shapes, evoking maps, islands, or the cells of organisms -- perhaps a marriage of her scientific background with her artistic proclivities. Text often plays a vital role in her painting process, manifested as script on the canvas surface itself. Poems, reflections, or words - although sometimes illegible - serve as mantras, textured foundations on which introspective journeys can be further explored and materialized on the painting. Adriana works mainly with oil-based paint but experiments with acrylics to create more fluid textures, and with other mixed media techniques to realize her artistic visions.
About the Artist:
Adriana G. Prat is an academically trained PhD scientist from Argentina. After moving to the USA, a more introspective life revealed her call to become a visual artist. She acquired essential art skills in adult education centers while experimenting on her own with media and techniques. The artist produces boldly colored and layered, oil- or acrylic-based non-representational paintings. Her work often evokes maps, islands, or the cells of organisms, signaling that she has not abandoned her scientific past. Adriana has shown at open studios, galleries, alternative spaces, and museums, in both Argentina and the greater Boston area, and, through a recent residency in Iceland. When not at her Cambridge studio or traveling, Adriana welcomes visitors to a shared studio in the Boston SOWA art district.
