Quantum computing is a type of computing that allows powerful machines to perform calculations that are too complex for ordinary devices. The concept was discovered in 1980 by American physicist Richard Feynman and has two major military applications: decrypting encoded messages and sending cryptographic keys to intercept otherwise secure communication chains. In 2019, Google announced that its 53-qubit Sycamore processor had completed a task that would have taken a conventional supercomputer at least 2.5 days in 3.3 minutes. China's 66-qubit Zuchongzhi 2 quantum processor reportedly completed the same task 1 million times faster in October. That processor was created by a team of researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences Center for Excellence in Quantum Information and Quantum Physics collaborated with the Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics and the Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology.
