New figures are showing the NHS is struggling with a pest problem. Just under half of the hospitals that were asked in a freedom of information request, reported problems with rodents, flies, bugs and even maggots. The Liberal Democrats acquired the information and are now asking for the government to provide urgent funding to deal with the issue.
Tanya Francis reviewed a copy of the damning report and has more.
We reached out to the Imperial College NHS Trust, who made the largest investment in pest control measures and they have said:
"We are committed to ensuring clean and safe environments for our patients, visitors and staff and have strong pest control measures in place across our ageing estate, some of which pre-dates the NHS, alongside rigorous infection prevention and control processes.
"We have a fully inclusive contract with an accredited pest control contractor. This provides regular monitoring so we can proactively identify issues, as well as 24/7 call out across our five north west London hospital sites."
