At 12:05 pm Wednesday, East Contra Costa Fire Protection District was dispatched to a report of a vegetation fire in the area of Sellers Road and Delta Road in the City of Oakley. The fire department received several calls of black smoke showing. PG&E quickly cut power to 5,600 PG&E customers as a precaution. Upon arrival, Engine 53 reported a wind driven vegetation fire was threatening several homes and was going to spread quickly as it was entering heavier vegetation and some trees. By 12:15 pm, it was reported the fire was about 100-yards from homes on Malicoat Ave and that firefighters were going to make access off Sierra Trail and Teton. By 12:21 pm, Engine 53 was making good knockdown on the head of the fire. It was also reported the Oakley Police Department Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office was evacuating homes on Crismore Drive. In total, about 50 homes were evacuated. The fire quickly grew thanks to the wind growing from 7-acres to 58-acres. Three three station fire district had assistance from CALFIRE, Contra Costa County Fire, Moraga-Orinda Fire, and San Ramon Fire. They also had air strikes from local agencies. By 3:35 pm, forward progress was stopped, and crews will be on scene mopping up for several hours. PG&E anticipates power to be restored later in the afternoon. The fire is under investigation.
