We are back in the Middle East and start our interview series with an old acquaintance: Daniel Schueftan who has been advising Israel's Prime Minister's for decades now and whose radical views on Israeli foreign policy and security matters are "mainstream", as he says.
Dan is an Israeli academic and chairman of the National Security Studies Center at the University of Haifa. He's also a popular consultant regularly travelling to Brussels, Washington and Berlin. At the beginning Dan informs us what he's learned on his latest trip to Europe. Have his views on Europe changed over the last four years or are we still living in "LaLa Land"?
His contempt for the EU and Europeans brings us to the US administration: Dan expresses his joy that Barack Obama is no longer President. Although he does not like Donald Trump personally, Dan explains why Trump's foreign policy is great for the US and Israel. Schueftan says there is no alternative to an American-led international order.
The conversation quickly turns to the "Iran deal": Why have American and European goverment failed? Why did Israel not want a deal at all? Why can Israel have the bomb but not Iran? How can a "regime change" in Teheran happen? Dan also explains the difference he makes between Iranians and Arabs.
After a while Dan talks about the "barbarians" in the Middle East: the Arab states. He explains why no Arab state will ever turn into a democracy and will always turn into a dictatorship. He lectures us on "good guys" and "bad guys". Why do Israel and Western states work with brutal regimes like Egypt and Saudi Arabia? Why is it "naive" to critize cooperations with those regimes?
After an hour we turn to the seemingly never ending conflict between Israelis and Palestinians: What has changed over the last four years? Why have we not gotten closer to peace? Why does the Israeli government pretend Gaza is not occupied anymore? Why does Netanyahu's administration not "feel" responsible for the people in Gaza? How long is the occupation in Westbank supposed to last? What role do Jewish settlers play? What would Dan do when it comes to the Westbank?
In the final minutes Dan talks about the Israeli political system and where he stands. He also explains who the only serious leader of Israel is and can be.
