The US president urged Afghanistan’s leaders to unite and “fight for their nation”, saying “they’ve got to fight for themselves.” Recriminations have grown over the withdrawal of western troops amid the Taliban’s rapid advance. The capitals of Badakhshan, Baghlan and Farah provinces were the latest to fall putting nine out of the country’s 34 regions in the hands of the insurgents. Despite a 20-year military mission by allied forces and billions of dollars spent training and shoring up Afghan troops, regular forces have collapsed amid the Taliban onslaught.
