This video covers installing and running Fallout: New Vegas on Linux using Steam Proton and fixes for the mouse sensitivity, launcher bug and frame rate.
Step 1. Enable Steam Proton Experimental.
Install Steam, launch and sign into your account.
Next, enable Proton for your entire library by navigating to Steam / Settings / Advanced, tick the Enable Steam Play for all other titles.
This will select Proton Experimental as the default Proton build, which is what we want, so restart Steam to apply.
Step 2. Install The Game.
Install the game as normal, and click Play.
When the launcher appears, set your graphical options, launch the game once, and then close.
Sometimes, after installing the game, the game launcher will not have the option to press Play, instead it will say Install.
If that is the case, navigate to steamapps/compatdata/22380/pfx/system.reg, open the file and add the below to the bottom of the file.
[Software\\Wow6432Node\\Bethesda Softworks\\FalloutNV] 1627669000
#time=1d7856f0ad32d72
"Installed Path"=""
Save the changes, and now the game launcher will have the Play option again.
Step 3. Fix Mouse Acceleration.
The high mouse acceleration in menus can be fixed by adding the following to the Fallout_default.ini file.
[Controls]
fForegroundMouseAccelBase=0
fForegroundMouseAccelTop=0
fForegroundMouseBase=0
fForegroundMouseMult=0
On my system this is found at:
/home/ryanjohnson/.steam/debian-installation/steamapps/common/Fallout New Vegas
Save the file once the changes have been made.
Step 4. Set 60FPS Framerate Limit.
Like many older Bethesda games that use the Creation Engine, game animations are tied to the framerate, and exceeding 60FPS will break certain parts of the game, so it recommended to set a frame limit of 60FPS.
The easiest method to do this is by using the below command in the game's custom launch options.
DXVK_FRAME_RATE=60 %command%
Once all of this done, finally launch the game as normal.
