The Dynamite Shack originally belonged to the Georgia-Pacific Lumber Company, which was a major player in the logging industry in the region. It was used as a storage facility for dynamite, which was utilized in logging operations in the area. The shack is a reminder of the area's logging history, which played a significant role in shaping the economy and landscape of Fort Bragg and the surrounding areas.
One common nickname for workers who handled explosives in the logging industry, including those who may have used the Dynamite Shack, was "powder monkeys." This term harkens back to the days when actual monkeys were sometimes employed to carry gunpowder or dynamite in mining and construction operations. Over time, the term came to refer to any individual tasked with handling explosives, including loggers in the lumber industry. The nickname "powder monkeys" reflects the dangerous nature of their work and the significant risks associated with handling explosives in the logging and construction industries.
