Two shark researchers, who came face-to-face with what is perhaps one of the largest great whites ever recorded, are pushing for legislation that would protect sharks in Hawaii. Ocean Ramsey, a shark researcher and conservationist who operates Oahu-based One Ocean Diving and Research with her fiancé, Juan Oliphant, said that images of her swimming next to a huge great white shark prove that these top predators should be protected, not feared. But the seasoned shark diver still doesn't think the general public should recklessly get into the water with these giants, especially around a food source like a rotting whale carcass. Ironically, that is exactly where she had her encounter, near a dead sperm whale off Oahu on Tuesday - an event that was documented and shared by her fiancé and business partner on social media. Ramsey said she has been pushing for a bill that would ban the killing of sharks and rays in Hawaii for several years, and hopes this year the measure will actually become law. January 18th, 2019.
