Centuries before Sabah came under the colonial administration of the United Kingdom, they were part of the Sulu Sultanate, which is now incorporated into the Philippines. So when the Federation of Malaysia was formed and they announced that Sabah would be incorporated into their nation, and not the Philippines, it threatened a direct conflict between the two nations.
