Looking for a way to use up those Halloween pumpkins? An easy, affordable and fun way to make a unique concrete planter! I was really excited by how well this worked, but if you try it yourself, line the inside of the big pumpkin with plastic wrap before pouring the concrete. While curing, the pumpkin added too much water to the concrete, creating a thin layer of muddy, unbonded concrete around the outside. Luckily, this only affected the outer millimeter, but using plastic wrap would probably give you a better, more uniform texture on the outside of the planter. You could carve the inside of the pumpkin to create some really cool patterns on the outside of the planter! I’m really interested in alternative ways of casting concrete, and I think that this pumpkin technique has some real potential. Pumpkins are relatively cheap, especially when you’re comparing them to the price of building materials. I paid 5 dollars for the big pumpkin, and 3 dollars for the mini pumpkin. They’re also an item that largely get thrown in the garbage after Halloween, so they’re ripe for alternative uses. We used the top half of the big pumpkin to make pumpkin soup, and we roasted the seeds. Check out the links below for all of the tools and materials I used in this project!
