Here's a quick walk-through of a work bench I built out of scrap lumber and carriage bolts. It's a very strong, sturdy base for any kind of work surface, from mechanical work to wedging clay to making jewelry. It's simple to build, is easily customizable, and gives you plenty of work space and storage space. The LEDs add some good lighting so you can see your work that much more clearly.
For wedging clay, I put on a plywood top with duck canvas stretched taut and stapled down. You could, if you were feeling ambitious, pour a plaster mold for the top.
