In this video I cover a method of installing and playing Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition on Windows 11 if you have purchased the game through Steam. Step 1. Edit Fallout.ini To Reduce Crashes And Improve Performance. To reduce crashes and improve performance, make the following amendments to the the Fallout.ini file which can be found at Documents\My games\Fallout3. bUseThreadedAI=1 iNumHWThreads=2 Please note that you might not need to do this if you have freshly installed the game since the Games for Windows requirement was removed in the 2021 update. Step 2. Patch Fallout3.exe For Large Address Aware. https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/6510/ Download and extract the application which should create a folder called 3GB enabler. Please note that application is archived using 7zip, so I recommend using 7zip to extract it. https://www.7-zip.org/ Next, navigate to where Fallout 3 is installed, typically C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 3 goty and take a copy of the Fallout3.exe. Paste that inside the 3GB enabler folder, and run the START.bat script, confirm the first prompt, then press "a" to patch. Close the window once done, and paste the now patched Fallout3.exe into the game’s installation path, overwriting the original Fallout3.exe. Step 3.
