Today I will be sharing my opinion about the current situation as a tourism and hospitality student who just officially graduated this June 2020. Firstly, I must say that I luckily currently have a job within the Human Resources department of a non tourism related company. This means that I will be speaking from a relatively comfortable situation. And I don’t say this to show off, but just to give a bit of context to the person who will be giving the opinion. Because as you know, opinions are subjective, and this subjectivity depends on many many different factors which include also the working status. Nevertheless, I have many people in my surrounding also having studied tourism and hospitality, in fact my girlfriend also studied the same and she is in a completely different situation than me since she is not able to find a job with everything going on. But let’s recap a bit what happened globally up until today. Since March this year 2020, the corona pandemic has caused economies all over the world to shut their borders and declare lock downs limiting also the movement that people are allowed to make. And let’s pause here for a moment and check the definition of tourism. According to the UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organisation), “Tourism is a social, cultural and economic phenomenon which entails the movement of people to countries or places outside their usual environment for personal or business/professional purposes.” Looking at other definitions out there, we can also find that tourism is “the act and process of spending time away from home in pursuit of recreation, relaxation, and pleasure, while making use of the commercial provision of services.” We could keep looking at other definitions out there, but they would all more or less illustrate the same, which is that tourism consists on moving and begin somewhere where you don’t usually sleep at. And I guess that this is not very compatible with lock downs and closing borders of countries. In the video, I discuss other interesting points regarding the Tourism Industry.
