There are limited things that you can do to speed up your website on Squarespace. This video will show you how to speed up the site as much as you can. If you want a faster site then you may be looking at moving to WordPress... I know it sucks, I'm pissed. I wish the situation was different but alas, Squarespace just doesn't cut it, trust me, I've tried!
0:00 Intro
0:31 Guidelines for file names:
- use only lower-case letters, numbers, underscores, and hyphens.
- Example: woman-walking-golden-retriever.jpg
- Be really descriptive as this acts as an alt-text if none is given.
1:15 Best file types:
- .jpg, .jpeg for images, .gif for gifs, .png for illustrations
1:35 File Size:
-Less Than 500KB for best results
-20 MB is the max per image but it should never be this big!
1:51 Image Dimensions:
-Between 1500 and 2500 pixels wide
-Squarespace will then create 6 variations of different sizes (all smaller than your original). 100 pixels, 300 pixels, 500 pixels, 750 pixels,1000 pixels, 1500 pixels, 2500 pixels
-BUT if the image is being added as a background image, then it will maintain its original size.
4:16 Image content:
- Use patterns and images with no text or borders for best results
-Add a "bleed" area to make cropping less noticeable
5:05 Remember your Alt-text:
-This is for your visitors that are using a screen reader or disabled images.
-Describe the image to someone that can't see it. Avoid using "photo" or "picture"-12 words or less, use keywords but don't stuff em
5:30 How to add alt-text in 7.1 and 7.0
- image block inline - add as the caption, you can hide caption if you'd like
-all other layouts - add alt-text to "filename" under "content" tab
-Gallery Section (7.1) - Use the title otherwise the description becomes the alt-text and caption if you leave out the title.
