While there is definitely some value to this, I find that incorporating composition/improvisation into practicing passages that require a lot of reps to be a more effective and engaging approach. This doesn't mean that you need to get out your manuscript paper and write a whole piece -- it just means using a little more creativity to tweak things to make your practice sessions less robotic and more effective.
