In this video, I’ll answer the question - why is it called a pink slip? Many of us dread hearing the words pink slip, which is a term used to refer to a notice of dismissal given to employees who are underperforming or whose roles have been eliminated and are about to be let go. In the simplest of terms, a pink slip is synonymous with a termination notice.
More often than not, pink slips are handed to individual employees, although there are some cases when they were given out collectively, due to mass layoffs and company closures. For instance, this year saw some of the world’s biggest conglomerates letting go of their workers, thanks to the COVID-19 global pandemic. Among them were General Motors, which furloughed a total of 6,500 employees, and The Walt Disney Company, whose theme park staff decreased by approximately 100,000.
