The term Processor Affinity is made up of 2 words "Processor" and "Affinity". The word processor means -"a machine that processes something". In a computing context, a processor is a CPU. And the word "Affinity" means - "a natural liking for and understanding of someone or something". If we combine the meaning of these 2 words we can define Processor Affinity as "natural liking by a process for specific CPU or CPUs". Without the processor affinity, the processes or threads or tasks can be assigned to any CPU as seen fit by the scheduler. There is no guarantee that the processes from the same application will be assigned to the same CPU or the CPUs. But with the processor affinity configured, the processes are tagged with the processor so that they get executed by the same CPUs.
