Come with us as we cruise Vanuatu in our Open 66 race boat!
There’s nothing quite like waking up on the water, and watching the sunrise with a boat made cappuccino in your hands... In this episode we give a taste to life onboard NV and some of the magic of being able to explore remote parts of the world with our own home.
But it's not all sunshine and roses... to be able to cruise in remote areas and to wake up in places like this, it’s important to be as self sufficient as possible. This not only means onboarding heaps of provisions and food, but also having systems onboard to make our own power and water.
But of course the more systems you have onboard, the more stuff there is to go wrong and fix. So as well as exploring our beautiful surroundings, in this episode we also learn a lot about our Spectra watermaker...
Watermakers turn salty water, so the sea water around us into drinking water by using extremely high pressure pumps to pump the water through super skinny membranes so thin that they take the salt particles out of the water.
During our big refit in Fiji, Oceania Water Group managed to bring back to life Timo’s nearly 25 year old Spectra Watermaker, after many years remaining unused in his previous boat.
This desalination process is known as reverse osmosis, and requires a high pressure of around 800psi. Our Spectra Watermaker achieves this using 2 low pressure electric pumps to accumulate water inside a special hydraulic pump called the Clark pump, which intensifies the pressure up to the 800psi required in an energy efficient way.
Despite the amazing job Oceania Water Group did at bringing our ancient Watermaker back to life, as they warned us, some parts were still 25 years old and sooner or later they too would need replacing.

Caio! We are Timo and Jo, an Italian and English couple with countless ocean miles under our belts. We're refitting an ex Vendée Globe Open 60 race boat originally designed & built & raced by famous Hungarian sailor Nándor Fa. He competed in her in the 1992 Vendée Globe (round the world single handed race known as “the Everest of the seas”), finishing 5th, becoming the first non-frenchman to finish.
We've recently finished a big refit in Fiji giving this old gladiator a new lease on life, transforming her from an ex race boat to a performance family cruiser, which we need to make both dog and baby proof! We launched in Sept 2022 and finally set sail from Fiji in April. With limited time&money we have plenty of challenges ahead to turn our dreams into reality&get back on the water!
Subscribe to our channel&track our progress as we release videos about our journey as well as "how to" videos about anything boat related.
Never stop to dream, never stop to sail!
