In his many studies and drawings, Leonardo expressed the desire to fly.
His journals include a detailed study of the flight patterns and wing design of birds; he designed several different types based on a bats' membranes, which he described as being lighter than those made from feathers.
He designed a variety of flying machines with mechanical wings that flapped, as well as a parachute and an ultralight hang glider.
Leonardo is said to have tested his flying machine on Monte Ceceri, but there is no evidence of such a test and no mention of it in his journals.
