Here's a summary of Tech News & Trends: March 20, 2024
🔵 The Anxious Generation from Jonathan Haidt publishes on March 26 - pre-order now! Jon wrote an article in the Atlantic this week titled, "End the Phone-Based Childhood Now" and it's excellent.
🔵 I traveled to Phoenix and back on Monday to testify in favor of HB2661, the Child Device Protection Bill, which we co-wrote with the National Center on Sexual Exploitation Law Center. This same bill was signed into law last week in Utah and is moving in 5 other states!
🔵 Roblox has added AI to its game-creation studio. This could be good and not good. Remember, Roblox isn’t just a game. It's MILLIONS of games with hundreds of millions of users. Now those who create games can use AI to help with coding. Great for kids who are into that! But now new Roblox games will be created quickly, and I suspect moderation of those games will lag. 🔵 Spotify is adding video content. We know Spotify already has issues that include explicit podcasts and poor parental controls. My middle school boys have enjoyed an Alexa device + Amazon Music's parental controls for a few years. It has been a great "right tech at the right time" device for our "slow tech" McKenna home. We have a streaming music guide with more details at protectyoungeyes.com, just search "streaming."
🔵 We already posted about it on Insta and FB, but it's worth reiterating a WIRED article that described horrific activity targeting vulnerable teen girls on Roblox, Discord, and Telegram. Baited into violent, evil, at times, suicidal acts all for the amusement of teen and adult men. Visit our website for more information about all three apps, anytime.
Remember #delayistheway! Most of the best things for childhood are almost always analog.
