On April 8, the United Nations Security Council, led by Malta's Ambassador Vanessa Frazier, forwarded the Palestinian Authority's bid for full membership to the committee on new member admissions. This move follows the Palestinian Authority's formal request last week to reconsider its 2011 application. Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian envoy to the UN, expressed hope for the council to implement the two-state solution by admitting Palestine. The committee, comprising 15 members, will assess the application's compliance with U.N. requirements and potentially bring it to a formal vote in the Security Council. Approval necessitates at least nine favorable votes without veto from major powers. Meanwhile, Israel's Ambassador Gilad Erdan labeled a Palestinian state a threat to national security, condemning the move as a breach of UN principles and an impediment to peaceful negotiations.
