What allowed us to know that the Universe is thirteen point seven billion years old? The Hubble Space Telescope. And what provided us with evidence of the existence of dark matter? The Chandra telescope. What allowed us to get a complete picture of the Galactic Center of the Milky Way? The Compton telescope. And what made it possible to discover one of the oldest stars? The Spitzer Space Telescope.
These are all NASA’s legendary telescopes or the so-called Great Observatories. Each of them explored space in a particular light spectrum. All of them made significant discoveries, but none was ever able to find the light of extraterrestrial civilizations. And, indeed, the time of the Great Observatories almost passed. They were all launched between nineteen ninety and two thousand three. And only two of them continue their work to this day.
It’s time for a successor valued at almost ten million dollars and it’s the James Webb Space Telescope. NASA, together with the European and the Canadian Space Agencies, had been preparing Webb for over twenty years. In December, twenty twenty-one, it’s promised to be finally launched. And some scientists hope that Webb will prove the existence of life very close to the Earth.
In this video, you'll find out: what do telescopes and origami have in common? Why would a telescope hide from the Sun? And what are Webb’s chances to detect artificial alien light?
