You may have heard the word ecocide being used a lot recently, but what is ecocide? It literally means “killing the environment”. Campaigners say that the idea behind it is that no one should go unpunished for destroying the natural world. And there are growing calls for it to be made a crime in international criminal law. Small countries like Vanuatu, which is a small island state in the South Pacific, have long tried to persuade large countries to reduce their emissions, but change has been fast enough. So, in December 2019, Vanuatu's ambassador John Licht suggested that it might be time to change the law itself. Many believe that if adopted, the crime of ecocide should apply to the most serious damage done to the environment and include activities like industrial live stock farming, oil spills and a process known as deep sea mining.
