Summary:
What is dementia?
Dementia is a syndrome, not a disease. It has a set of symptoms that affect a wide range of mental functions including memory and reasoning. Loss of memory is quite common. It’s important to note that dementia is an umbrella term, and Alzheimer’s is included under it.
What are the symptoms?
The early symptoms of dementia are mild. Because of this, they are usually overlooked. It starts with simple episodes of forgetfulness. A person will have difficulty following a plan. This could be something as simple as a cooking recipe. You may have seen elderly people struggling to keep track of time. They have difficulty completing familiar tasks like making a cup of tea, or changing TV settings.
What are the causes of dementia?
The exact cause of dementia is unclear, but it occurs when certain brain cells are damaged. Age is one of the most important risk factors when it comes to dementia. You’ll be amazed to know that more than half of people aged 85 years and older may have a type of dementia. Genetics also play an important role.
