Toyota GR86 First Drive - Value For Money Sportscar!
So you think the days of good value sportscars are gone? No, step forward the Toyota GR86. There is a slight problem, though, and that is you can’t buy it from Toyota at the moment, so you’ll need to pay over the odds on the used market.
Well, that’s the situation in the UK at least, so let’s find out why this Japanese sportscar so popular. I’ve only got this car for 20 minutes, so this should be a good time, not a long time.
The GR86 picks up from where the GT86 left off, a car that was once the darling of motoring journalists across the nation, but I must confess, I found it a bit overrated on my brief time with it. Anyway, that was then, this is now.
Like the GT86, the GR features a boxer engine at the front end of the car, only it’s grown from 2.0 litres to 2.4. The cylinder block is the same as before, but the bore diameter has increased from 86mm to 94mm. Sorry if that’s a bit nerdy for you, you may find it…boring...
Yeah, let’s swiftly move on and give you some juicy performance stats. Horsepower has increased by 17% to 231hp, and torque has been increased to 250Nm.
Not only is there more torque available, but importantly it’s available lower down in the rev range. 0-62 is dealt with in 6.3 seconds, and the top speed is 140mph. If you go for the auto version, the 62 time increases to 6.9 and the top speed is 134mph.
It's not just the engine that has been re-worked, in fact pretty much every area of the car has been tweaked in the pursuit for improvement. The GR86 has been made stiffer, but also lighter thanks to improved materials used, and the centre of gravity has been made lower than before, better for handling.
Now if you want more nerdy information, you’re in luck. Thanks to careful consideration of materials for the GR86, the weight of the new model is close to that of the GT86 despite extra safety and collision protection. The front lateral rigidity has been improved by 60% and the overall body twisting rigidity has been increased by 50%, which makes for better handling.
Toyota states the 6-speed manual has been revised to cope with the extra power of torque as well as making the GR86 fun to drive. The manual ‘box has a new carbon synchroniser to make it easier to shift into fourth gear and there’s new low-viscosity oil and new bearings to ensure smoothness when shifting. I’d personally argue there’s still room for improvement, but it’s far from a bad shift.
When the Toyota GR86 was released to order in the UK it had a starting price of £29,995 or £32,085 for the auto, which seems like a steal for what you’re getting. It’s clear others agree with me as the car sold out its UK allocation in under the time it takes to complete a football match.
Standard features include 18” alloys wrapped with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres, not the Primacy tyres as fitted to the GT86, 8” touchscreen, 7” digital driver’s display, smartphone connectivity, LED headlights, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry, blind spot monitor, reversing camera with rear cross traffic alert and auto-folding door mirrors.
