In this video, I’ll answer the question – why is Ireland two countries? We often say “Northern France” or “Northern Canada” to refer to a region of that particular country. But unlike these, “Northern Ireland” means a totally different country – one with a different government and flag from its counterpart. But why exactly is Ireland separated into two separate nations?
Before diving into the fascinating – and oft painful – history of this island, a particular distinction must be made first. Its southern part – or the Republic of Ireland – is a sovereign country whose capital is the city of Dublin. On the other hand, Northern Ireland is a constituent of the United Kingdom and has the city of Belfast as its capital.
