In my Bohemian Rhapsody videos, there were comments on how it was impressive that I played without the music sheets, but there were other comments that it was "just muscle memory" and nothing special. I agree that musicians do remember music sheets - but it's not muscle memory.
Whilst you can play by muscle memory - muscle memory works for the basics only. It would be like saying a great painter paints by numbers. All their strokes, angles and dabs are different. Playing piano notes are different too - leaning in, circled weighted arms and so much more. All piano notes are played differently, and depending on the mood/audience - I may change the way a certain note is played - loud, softer, weighted, lengthened. I still have a lot more to learn but luckily I have a good memory - so I can remember the sheets and I can remember the notes. The hard part is thinking how to play it!
I thought I would share something I did last year. At school, we were learning about circles in maths. The text book had pi and said that it was never ending - but it had some of it written down. I remember how I thought it was cool that it was used for memory challenges.
So I just remembered them as a challenge! Nothing to do with my music - but I thought I would share it.
