The Giant's Causeway is a geological wonder that withstands history and legend in the North Atlantic Ocean. It has a landscape of dramatic cliffs and around 40,000 basalt stone columns. Most of the columns are hexagonal, although some have four to eight sides. The tops of the columns is above the sea level and it forms stepping stones that disappear under the sea. Given its unique structure like a giant path of stones that is now partly above the sea and partly under the sea, there are myths and legends regarding the formation of this amazing place.
Now, If you believe in myths and local legends, the scientific explanation may not satisfy you as the legend says that the columns are the remains of a causeway built by a giant. The story goes that the Irish giant was challenged to a fight by a Scottish giant. The Irish giant accepted the challenge and built the causeway across the North Channel through which he can travel to Scotland to defeat the Scottish giant. Well, you might be excited to know what happened to that fight? Unfortunately, that legend is told differently what happened, but one thing has been made sure in the stories that the Irsih giant is undefeated. There are other stories as well, but we are not going into those details today. However, according to scientific community, the dramatic cliffs with around 40,000 basalt stone columns were created by volcanic eruptions around 60 million years ago.
Anyway, whatever the story behind its formation, the Giant's Causeway is now recognised as one of most precious landscapes Northern Ireland’s and is under the custody of National Trust for its conservation. It was also declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986.
Dunluce castle is considered as one of the most picturesque and romantic of Irish Castles. Unlike the Carrickfergus Castle, Dunluce castle is preserved in a fragile condition in the cliffs hanging over the sea. The present castle ruins is believed to have been established in early 16th century.
The Old Bushmills Distillery is operating since 1608 and is the one of oldest licensed distillery in the world. There is a shop and an adjacent bar to experience the Bushmills Irish Whiskey.
The Dark Hedges is an avenue of beech trees in Antrim County of Northern Ireland. The giant trees form a tunnel-like atmosphere. This place came to fame once it was portrayed in HBO's popular television series “Game of Thrones” as the "King's Road" through which young Arya Stark travels. Since then, this road has become a popular tourist attraction. According to Historical documents, in about 1775, James Stuart built a new house and planted over 150 beech trees along the entrance road to the estate. According to legend, the dark hedges are haunted and is often visited by a ghost called the Grey Lady, who travels from tree to tree, which however cannot be verified, of course. The Dark Hedges, on a serious note, is a site that needs strong preservation. Of the 150 trees originally planted in 1775, only less than 90 trees have remained. Tourist crwods and more vehicular movement in the nearby roads are potentially damaging the trees' roots, according to scientists. As a result, traffic is now banned on the road between the trees.
