Presented under Artistic Director for Jazz Jason Moran, the Kennedy Center’s 2023–2024 Jazz Season celebrates Duke Ellington’s 125th birthday with extraordinary tributes: a grand production of Duke Ellington’s Sacred Concert with Cyrus Chestnut, a new Kennedy Center commission by Tomeka Reid, the legendary Duke Ellington Orchestra legacy big band, a solo piano concert with Jason Moran, and more.
The 2023–2024 Jazz Season also features Jason and Alicia Hall Moran’s new musical love note ‘Family Ball,’ John Coltrane’s ‘Africa/Brass’ performed by legendary trumpeter Charles Tolliver and saxophonist Camille Thurman, and Joshua Redman’s ‘where are we’ featuring vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa.
The Club at Studio K will host intimate performances with Grammy–winning bassist and composer Linda May Han Oh, pianist Myra Melford and drummer Allison Miller’s Lux Quartet, drummer and composer Clarence Penn’s ‘Penn Station,’ and others to be announced.
Beloved annual Kennedy Center traditions return: NPR’s A’ Jazz Piano Christmas’ with Melvis Santa, ‘A Jazz New Year’s Eve’ with Jazzmeia Horn, and the 27th annual Mary Lou Williams Jazz Festival featuring Eliane Elias, Endea Owens, Ingrid Jensen and the Center Song Project, and Julia Keefe’s Indigenous Big Band.
