Black faculty provide models and mentoring for all students, while at the same time shedding light on cultural norms and values promoted in the academy. Yet Black faculty are leaving higher education at increasing rates. Crystal White of the University of Memphis and Bridget Turner Kelly of the University of Maryland share their own stories of recruitment, retention and mentoring highs and lows as two Black women faculty. These stories will be punctuated with strategies and lessons for creating an environment conducive to effectively recruiting, retaining and mentoring Black faculty.
