Reporting bugs to the Ubuntu developers is a great way to contribute to the project.
As with most open source projects, the people who make the software don't have access to all possible hardware setups and configurations.
So they rely on users to report when things don't work.
Users often complain to their friends in person, or on forums or social media when they uncover bugs in Ubuntu.
This is a problem for developers, as they can't be everywhere and see all these conversations.
The best place to report bugs in Ubuntu is in launchpad.net.
Reporting bugs takes a little time to get right, but is worthwhile as it's a direct connection to experts and developers.
There's extensive documentation on how to file bugs in Ubuntu, but lets go over the basics.
To file bugs in Ubuntu you'll need a launchpad account. Go to launchpad.net and sign up.
It's also known as an Ubuntu Single Sign On or SSO account. You may already have one.
Now let's file the bug.
There's a utility installed on all ubuntu systems called "ubuntu-bug".
Running ubuntu-bug will go through a few steps to gather information about the nature of the problem.
Follow the prompts and answer the questions to gather information about where the bug occurs.
If you know which application the bug occurs in, you can run "ubuntu-bug -w" then click the window of the application which has a problem.
Then, again, step through the prompts as directed.
You'll get email when the status of a bug changes, or if the developer requires more information.
Do keep an eye out for these, and try to provide useful feedback when requested.
Filing bugs is only part of the story. If you know how to workaround or fix the issue, let others know in the bug report.
